This makes sense: modern building automation shares more common with network monitoring tools than with old-school thermostats or breaker panels. The data volume is significant, the architecture is digital, and cybersecurity is a very real concern.
Ascent has observed firsthand how organizations are approaching this shift. More operators are requesting unified platforms that allow users to monitor power, cooling, fire systems, and access control from a single interface — ideally one that’s mobile-accessible and scalable across multiple sites. These platforms are expected to provide alerting, trending, reporting, and analytics capabilities. They’re also expected to integrate with enterprise tools, from ticketing systems to cloud-based data storage.
But the infrastructure side of things has also shifted. Structured cabling and IP addressing must be coordinated with corporate standards. System uptime is measured in IT terms — “five nines” availability — and that expectation now applies to the chiller, the UPS and the fire systems, not just servers.
However, this evolution isn’t without its growing pains. Cultural differences between IT and data center facilities can still create friction. But the benefits are clear: improved monitoring, faster response times, greater energy efficiency and a more agile operating model that can adapt as compute requirements change.
The result is an environment that’s not only more intelligent, but more aligned — one where IT and facilities speak a common language, share a common platform and contribute to a common mission: delivering reliable, scalable, efficient infrastructure.
